Last night, my niece (Alissa) asked me, "Uncle John, is it hard to keep your faith fresh while being a pastor?" To be honest, I can't remember when someone asked me this question. So...is it hard? How do I keep my faith fresh?
Keeping my faith fresh for me is no different than how anyone else keeps their faith fresh. I have to spend time reading and studying scripture, spending time in prayer. I also make it a regular part of my spiritual input and diet to listen to and read material from other Christian authors and pastors I respect.
Here's the crux of the situation though. I wish I could say I am really good at doing this every day. Truth is, I'm not. If you struggle with consistent time reading and studying scripture and spending focused time in prayer - I understand that struggle and share it with you. Believe it or not, being a pastor does not mean I spend hours and hours and hours reading the Bible and praying. There is planning, administration, staff management, leadership development, service planning, etc. that can too easily crowd out time in scripture and prayer.
What I personally need to do is make time in scripture the first and highest priority of my day. If I don't get up in the early hours of the day and spend time in scripture and prayer - it is difficult to do it.
Something else I do to beat this battle of consistency is to have my Bible readily accessible - on my cell phone. I use YouVersion and since I always have my phone with me, I always have something to read scripture. For my studying, I use WordSearch which is a Bible study software program where I can dig deep into passages and write about what God is challenging me with.
Lastly, you can help me be consistent by praying for me. I really do need your prayers.
