Philippians 1:6 ... "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Most Bible scholars agree that the "good work" Paul is referring to is their salvation. God initiates my salvation, draws me to the point of inviting Christ into my life, and justifies and makes me righteous through the work of Christ on the cross. It is all of God. God began my salvation, continues my salvation, and will complete my salvation.
There are three aspects to my salvation: 1) I WAS saved; 2) I AM BEING saved; and 3) I WILL BE saved.
I WAS saved. God saved me from the penalty of sin. That penalty is spiritual death and separation from God now and through all eternity. Ephesians 2:1 says I was dead in my trespasses and sin. But goes on to say in verses 4-6, "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus." I am no longer dead in my relationship with God. I am no longer separated from God. I am now alive with Christ! I am not spiritually and perfectly positioned with Christ! Wow!
I AM BEING saved. God is saving me from the power of sin. God, through the Holy Spirit, works in my life (my thoughts, my words, my actions, etc.) to make me more like Jesus and less susceptible to sin! Yes, the more I grow in my relationship with Jesus, the more I become like Jesus - the less I sin! THAT is incredible! By the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in me, I am learning not to conform to the pattern of this world but I'm being, according to Romans 12:2, transformed by the renewing of my mind. Earlier in Romans 8:29 God says I was predestined to become transformed to the image of Jesus! Wow again!
I WILL BE saved. When my life on this earth is over and I enter heaven to live eternally with Jesus, I will be saved from the presence of sin. There is no sin in heaven - only holiness. There is no fear, no sadness, no disease, no depression, no death, no temptation. Revelation 21:4 says God will "wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain." As Philippians 1:6 says, I will be complete in Christ! THAT is so incredible!!
With all that in mind, it sends me to my knees in humble worship thanking God for my salvation and the good work He started, is working in me, and will complete in me. Today, as I mow the lawn and clean the garage, I have a reason to worship as I meditate and bask in this amazing truth! May I NEVER forget it!
