People hate to lose. We want to win. We don’t want second place, third place or even a participation trophy. Anybody agree?

Remember the 2016 Wild Card game between Vikings and Seahawks? 22 seconds left in the game. The winner goes on in the playoffs. Loser goes home – season over. Vikings down by one point, all Blair Walsh had to do was kick a simple 27-yard field goal. Make it – we win. Miss it – we lose. If you don’t remember, here’s what happened:

I think we all feel like Blair Walsh did in that moment sometimes. Alone, like a failure, overwhelmed, ready to quit.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Romans 8:37

What if I told you that if you are a follower of Christ, you can’t lose? Do you believe that? Do you live like that’s the truth? Do you let it affect the way you live your life? Or do you feel like life is beating you up and you are losing?

Life can often leave us feeling alone, overwhelmed or like a failure.

Are you are getting beat up by:

  • The demands of parenting and managing the schedule of your family?
  • A job that makes you feel stuck?
  • Money problems that make you feel like you are drowning?
  • A marriage that isn’t picture perfect?
  • An addiction you just can’t seem to conquer?
  • The overwhelming weight of depression or anxiety?
  • Sickness or medical problems that you can’t control?

If you had to write down on a name tag who you are, would you write, “Through Christ I am a Conqueror?”

Probably not. Based on 33 years of ministry, I think it’s far more likely that you would write one of these 3 things:

I am a failure

  • … because I went through a divorce.
  • … because I crossed a line sexually.
  • … because my kids are far from God.
  • … because I am trapped by pornography.
  • … because I am overwhelmed by debt problems.
  • … because I’ve made so many mistakes.
  • … because I just can’t seem to get life right.

I am confused

  • … because I don’t know why bad things are happening to me.
  • ... because I don’t know why I have to go through all of this pain.
  • … because I can’t make sense of my life.

I am overwhelmed

  • … because I can’t get relief.
  • … because I can’t get it right.
  • … because I can’t get ahead.
  • … because I can’t solve these problems.
  • … because I can’t take the pain away.
  • … because I just can’t take it anymore.

When you feel confused, overwhelmed, or like you’ve failed, you can come back to the truth from Romans 8:37 that if you are a follower of Jesus – you are not a loser! You are a conqueror!

You are MORE than a conqueror!

You have the power of Jesus on your side. In other words, You. Can’t. Lose.

As we go throughout this week, we will dig deeper into that verse and the reason why we can’t lose throughout the week. But for today, repeat Romans 8:37 several times to yourself. Try to memorize it if you can. Write it somewhere that it will remind you of God’s promise that we are more than conquerors.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Romans 8:37

Daily Prayer:

Dear Jesus, today I am feeling like a failure, overwhelmed and confused. I know that you said that through you we are more than conquerors, but help me to remember that as I go throughout my day today. Help me to lean on you for power and strength to make it through my overwhelming situations. Amen
